The scientific name of beetroot is “Beta vulgaris” and it is commonly known as garden beet, a juicy root vegetable. Beetroots are in several varieties and are grouped according to their shapes like flat, short- top shaped, globular to oval, half long and long. The most commonly grown variety in India are Crimson Globe and Detroit dark red where both belongs to globular to oval group. It is believed that beetroot is originated from Mediterranean region of Europe or South West Asia, now it is distributed and cultivated in the Caribbean, Malaysia, Indonesia Central, East and West Africa. Beetroot is taken in many ways and are used in salads, pickle preparations, Curries and chutneys. They are eaten either boiled, roasted, grilled or raw.

Here are a few reasons why you should include beetroot in your eating plan.

Beetroots are rich in Potassium, magnesium, soluble fiber, phosphorus, iron, proteins, carbohydrates, anti-oxidants, vitamin A, B & C Vitamin B 6, beta-carotene,and folic acid. These are a few but many nutrients, vitamins and minerals are found in beetroots.
It is used to treat constipation, wounds and skin problems.
Beetroot juice is the most effective remedy to lower the high blood pressure.

Beetroots are particularly beneficial to women whom are pregnant, as the vitamin B and iron are very beneficial to new growth cells during pregnancy and replenishing iron in the woman’s body.
